I just wanted to comment that I am so glad that there is all this information out there. I have a Selective Mutism daughter who just entered middle school. She was diagnosed in 3rd grade. We have certainly come a long way but having this information to give to teachers is wonderful

I am interested in starting a support group in Waynetown, IN. I am meeting with a minister (8-28-2008) to see if we can use his church as a meeting place.

My daughter has suffered SM for 7 years (she is nine). She has Tourette Syndrome and phobias.

Thank You
Natalie Gulley

I have a 13 yr old son that has been diagnosed with SM, I was curious if there are any other parents i can talk with about this condition. My son does talk in the home with myself and his brothers and sisters and only one other person that is a male that is a family friend. In school settings or anywhere else he is silent and will not talk to anyone. i would really like to learn more about SM. Anyone's help is appriciated.

I'm 25 now, but I had SM from 3years old to 7. I don't remember why I stopped talking, but my mom was there by my side the entire time, with doctor appointments and counslers.

She says I stopped speaking to everyone except my brother "around" the time I had a nutty blonde teenage babysitter Stacey, and Stacey's boyfriend let me drive once. ??? Stacey was just a bad person and was stealing my mom's clothing (my mom went to her house and retreived her clothes and promptly fired Stacey)

I used to significantly avoid talking about this, I would just not care and not want to know why. But the more I think about it, my past is just as important as my future so it is good I want to know more about it and why I didn't speak to anyone but my mom and brother. My mom and I have talked about this a lot, and I am just now starting to listen!

I'm still a bit messed up in the head but who isn't these days. I talk to people at least now.

My daughter has been diagnosed as having selective mutism, sophia phobia, and severe anxiety. She only talks to me, her sister. She did talk to her grandmother when she was alive but she doesn't talk to any other family members, or to any of her teachers or other children. She has just turned 14 and I am getting very very concerned now. She has been attending a summer program at a private special ed schools and has made some progress. She doesn't talk to anyone yet but she has been responding in a nonverbal ways, something she didn't even do in public school. I want her to continue in this private school for 8th grade and high school (she loves it there) but the board of ed in our district is opposed to the idea. Does anyone have any suggestions on if they think keeping her in this special ed school is a good idea.
