My daughter had this, although it did not have a label at the time. She talked at home. Had great language skills. Could memorize the whole dialog of a comedy movie. Bright and actually quite funny. People would ask her a question and she would just stare and then look at me. I always gave her the opportunity to speak, but she'd have to know someone a very long time before doing so. She passed her preschool screening with flying colors. The testor said, just one thing, "Does she talk?" When checking a book out at the library she would use sign language and spell her name. She gradually got better. She's 20 now and works in a social setting. But when it comes to a problem with her bills, she'd much rather pay than confront someone. Making appointments are dreadful. Hates talking on the phone. Added: May 2, 2008 |

My son had SM and school/social anxiety for two years. We have recently come to suspect his asthma medication Singulair may have contributed to his anxiety. He has been off the medication for more than a year and doesn't suffer from these conditions anymore. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Added: April 25, 2008 |

I am interested in this topic; I have a 20 yr old son who was diagnosed with this condition at age 4 or 5. I had no clue he had selective mutism since he talked up a storm at home. Although he had some psychotherapy, he did very well in school & is now attending college in California. Too many people don't understand this disorder & asked me, right in front of him "What's wrong with him?". More understanding is needed. Added: April 15, 2008 |

I had selective mutism as a child. I only recently discovered it had a name when I watched a news show about the topic, and I saw myself in those children. I had it the worst from 3 to 4 years old, when I only talked to my parents, but it lingered in some ways until I was about 10, when I still wouldn't talk to certain relatives or family friends that we hadn't seen in a long time. I remember whispering into my mother's ear and talking into my cupped hands when trying to make my wishes known. At first, my parents were told I was autistic. They sent me to a psychologist, who thought I was trying to control them. I came across this web site after a recent conversation with my parents about the news show that I saw. They didn't know there was a name for my problem either. I am 38 now and have two very outgoing children, who have no signs of shyness about them! I am relatively outgoing now, and often have to overcome my inner shyness to make presentations at work. I don't think anyone I know today would guess about my shy past. I am so glad to see this organization available to parents today. I know my parents would have benefited from this information 35 years ago. Added: April 5, 2008 |

I was fortunate to stumble upon this website. I am 46 years old and have suffered with varying degrees of social anxiety most of my life. I was never diagnosed with SM, but after reading the information on this site, I realize that I DEFINITELY had it. I would say the disorder was severe for me from the age of 4 to 7 and slowly got better, even though I had absolutely no treatment and my parents and teachers were clueless to my situation. In my case, I would speak only to children (pre-adolescence) but not to any adults except for my mother and father. I would not speak to any other adults including Aunts, Uncles and Grandparents who I saw a few times a month as they lived very nearby. As an adult, I have sought treatment for my social anxiety and I have improved some. Medications have not helped. I also have signs of OCB (hoarding), though I have never been diagnosed with full-blown OCB and I have worked hard for the last three years to reduce the amount of things I hoard. It takes constant vigilence, but I am succeeding. My word to all is that improvement does happen, although at times very slowly Added: March 24, 2008 |
