I am working as a teaching a**tant in a Primary School and have been working with a delightful 10 year old girl who has SM. She has progressed well and does talk to me and has spoken to a few of her teachers. My problem is trying to achieve a volume which is more than a whisper. I have tried many things but wondered if anyone could suggest anything to help us?

My son is six years old, he was diagnosed with SM soon after his fourth birthday. Prior to that he spoke in the preschool setting. I will always wonder why him as a parent. It's been tough and he still isn't talking. I pray for him to talk at school, just a whisper anything. Since starting kindergarten he doesn't sit down either. He finally has started to play on the playground so that makes me happy. He has made considerable progress but it's tough to see him like this knowing the child he really is. Unfortunately he experienced a tough transition returning after winter break and two panic attacks later I had no choice but to review the alternative of medication. We have been on medicine for the last two months. I have witnessed many improvements from no potty accidents to playing with peers. It's hard as a parent because this is one thing I have no control over. Hoping and praying for success in Bryce.

I have a child who was diagnosed at the age of 5 with SM. After around first grade the problem diminished and she became somewhat socially active. The problem we are facing now is not that she won't talk to her friends or teachers at school or even her friends parents, she has stopped talking to us ( Her mother, me (her step dad) and her biological father) we are going on 5 months with this behavior. It is very confusing for all of us has anyone ever heard of this happening to a child that suffers from SM?

My brother, Harold, is 49 years old, and we are sure he had this condition as a child. Back then, nobody was able to diagnose him, and the school and the psychologists put my parents through hell. They accused them of "doing something to him" that must have traumatized him into not speaking.

Harold still suffers from anxiety and OCD. Are there any therapists who can diagnose an adult who once had selective mutism?

My son is 14 and on medication in conjunction with cognitive therapy. He has been on medication for about 5 months and the improvement is incredible.

As a child he was diagnosed with selective mutism, but advice from professionals was to expose him to social situations and the school made special provisions for him. Not many people or professionals really know how to help.

Just wanting to hear from others in my situation.
