My name is Adina Forbis. I am one of the exemplary members on the Selective Mutism Foundation Website. I was just recently married and am proud to say that there is a way to conquer Selective Mutism. Never to this day have I thought I'd be married to my husband. It's just a matter of time...it's a matter of time to find the right path towards success. It's all about receiving support from family and friends and believing in yourself. This is one of the building blocks towards self-esteem. From my own experience in life, I can truly say that this is beneficial. May I leave these words of wisdom to those I admire for being interested in the Selective Mutism Foundation Website.

I have a child in my preschool class that shows symptoms of selective mutism, and a teacher of mine thought it was worth looking into. This site was very helpful. Thanks!

I just want to say thank you for having such a good web sight out there with information on selective mutism. My son was diagnosed in preschool and I had a ver hard time finding reliable information on the subject. Thank you. I have looked to this site several times over the last year, and finally decided to leave a message.

I am a 35 year old mother who suffers from panic disorder, but at the moment am coping ok. My 12 year old son has tourettes syndrome and he is coping ok as well. My 7 year old daughter has not been officially diagnosed with selective mutism, but her 1st grade elementary teacher suspects she has this syndrome. She has shown signs since headstart, but it was contributed to a control issue and not handled appropriately. She will only whisper to the teachers and has never spoke one word to another child in school. Outside of school she is very intelligent and has many friends she speaks to and plays well with. There are even people in my family whom she has known since birth that she has never spoke to. Any information regarding treatment at this point would be greatly appreciated. Respectfully, Shoshana Wells

I am new to this site and am very excited to be aware of the Selective Mutism Foundation. The description and symptoms of Selective Mutism seem to match a relative perfectly. How do I go about finding health providers in Minneapolis, MN who work with people with Selective Mutism?

Now I am 39 years old and I also had SM since I was 5 years old. When I went to pre-school only I noticed I was suffering from that. In school I didn't speak a word but at home I talked with my closed ones. But never spoke with not familiar ones. And main thing now I recognized about that was I was so shy and anxious to talk after being silent for long time. After silent for some time I felt embarrased that others would make a joke out of me.
But after I went to another school I wanted to speak and I started to talk little by little. But if some old school kid was present I was reluctant to talk again. So,my opinion is if your child doesn't speak at school please change their school and it will help a lot to encourage them. This is my own experience. But now also I'm having this shyness and social phobia with me. And it has affected me very much with my profession also. Some times I feel depressed and totally anxious and cannot do any thing. I think SM is the cause for it. But finally I think I 'm not alone and I recognised the cause for my whole failures of life. So fortunately now your children has this information you better hurry up to treat them.
And my father also had this type of symptoms but dont know exactly.

This site is very good and thanks for the information on SM. Since it is not popular in Asian countries. Apparentely, there should be lot of cases in Asia.
