I am the mother of a 10 yr old son with selective mutism. He was diagnosed at age 7 after several years of asking, pleading with the dr for help with his 'shyness'. Finally after he was being punished at school for not speaking and sent to the principals office, the speech therapist happened to be in the office and asked if anyone had thought of selective mutism. I instantly thougt relief..there's a name for it. We have tried and tried to find help locally for SM. No luck!! He has tried Prozac and was up to 60 milligrams when I said enough is enough. We've tried family therapy, art therapy, counseling... lots of money, no help. School continued to remove him for the honor roll due to his lack of speach so I switched schools. He has made some progress since being off meds like making eye contact, controlling his emotions more, etc but still no words and still so much further to go. I don't know what to do or where to look. Help just doesn't seem to here in KY and I feel like that if we keep just pretending he's normal then he may never speak. He speaks only to siblings, dad and myself... no one else. We need help! We need a solution! Added: August 29, 2007 |

i am just entering the world of selective mutism with my 6 year old daughter. i didnt know there was such a thing. i knew something wasnt right about her, but was told that she is just shy. her pediatrician didnt even say anything about it. i would tell the doctor that she didnt talk to adults and wont answer when spoken too. my daughter was diagnosed with adhd and her first neurogolist didnt pay attention to me when i expressed concerns about her being nonverbal. then i heard about the doctors at the dan marino center. with the wonderful doctors and support staff, my daughter was diagnosed and we are now getting the help we need. My daughter is thirteen years old and although she has not been professionally diagnosed I am positive she has SM. I happened to be searching on the net and somehow came across it accidentally. I have over the years of her growing up questioned her pediatricians and always been told even as late as last year that she is shy and will grow out of it. She only talks to myself, her Dad, and sister. no one else. Her aunt lives with us but she does not talk to her. she nods her head or points, she will write notes back and forth with her,and in every other way she will be a normal silly girl. she just won't talk. She has friends that she will communicate with on the computer, but not face to face. she has a cell phone but it is used for texting mostly with her friends. She will communicate with her teachers at school but only when she is spoken to. she then talks very softly. Her teachers didn't even seem concerned about her, saying she is just very shy. I have been frustrated for years because I worry about her being able to communicate in an emergency situation, or to defend herself. When I try to talk to her about it and getting her help she gets angry and sometimes cries, then she stops talking to me for awhile. I am desperate for advice as to where I can find a physician that is knowledgeable of this disorder. someone please help. Added: August 14, 2007 |

Hi. My daughter Haley is 5 years old diagnosed with sm this year. I knew something was different ever since she was 7 months old. Her preschool teacher said she has not spoken a word in the 2 yea**he has been in her classroom. We are seeking help now from a child therapist. The progress I am told is very slow. My heart breaks for her every day whenever she leaves our home. Most people could never understand what we are feeling as parents of a child who suffers with this disorder. I am looking for other parents to talk to since I have noone else that could understand. Any advice or something you may have done to help your child would be very much appreciated. Longing for the day Haley does not have to feel so scard. Added: August 10, 2007 |

after taking a look at this site, i have just figured out that my daughter has sm. i first noticed when she was at 4 year old kinder that she would not speak to anyone. she had one friend that she would talk to, but that was it. then she started prep in 2005 and she still wasnt talking. tried asking for help from the teacher, she just said she was shy. i ended up video taping chloe at home behaving very normally, talking etc,, gave this to the teacher, she couldnt believe it was the same child. chloe started seeing the school social worker weekly, but to no avail. the answer was always, she is just shy. chloe choosed who she speaks to, sometimes wont even talk to her nanny or close family friends. she has friends that come to our house, but will not speak to them. it is very frustrating. chloe is now in grade 2. i would love to hear from someone living in the south east suburbs who has a child with sm and what they have done to seek help. i at least feel better that there is a name for this. and that i am not just being silly, im sure my friends cant understand my reasons for feeling upset at this behaviour, not when their children are, so called "normal" . Hi, Our daughter has SM..it is so hearbreaking! She is almost 8..I wish we knew about this anxiety disorder when she was younger. I believe we are having a hard time helping her now because it's just been a way of life for her for so long. She's been on prozac for almost 8 months and has been making progress in therapy. We feel she's taking baby steps but to her they are HUGE steps! She will be starting 3rd grade in the fall..we were praying she would be speaking by then but doesnt look like it..hopefully she'll atleast be wispering by then. It is so difficult to watch your child live like this. I have given info to the preschool and kindergarten cla** she attended to inform the teachers about this disorder. None of them ever heard of it!! We need to find a way to spread the word so children can get the help they need asap! Added: July 24, 2007 |

My boyfriend of almost 2 years has sm. He is 21 and I am 23. Although we never had a problem communicating I never understood why he never spoke in large groups or why he would not respond during our fights. This website has helped me understand why and has also given me ways to more effectivly communicate with him. Added: July 17, 2007 |
