Hi, I have a 4 year old daughter with selective mutism. She has been in pre-school since 3 and still wont utter a word to the children or teachers. She totally freezes up! This worries me so much. She stares at the floor and puts her fingers in her mouth and just stiffens up. She has no speach problems and is a very bright girl. I need some help on how i can help her. Last weekend she went to a classmates bday party. She didnt say a word to anyone but something different happened which i never saw before . She usually whispers in my ear to tell me something so no one can hear and she tried to and nothing would come out. I asked her when we left why couldnt she speak .. she goes mom i dont know i just dont know. with a sad look. Its really breaking my heart. I hear the kids saying oh, dont talk to her she doesnt talk. Whats wrong with her why dont she talk? etc etc. The speach therpist at her school is working with her now but there is no progress. I live in Pa does anyone know of any help i can get?? thank you. Added: February 28, 2007 |

My daughter was diagnosed at the age of 3yrs old with a phonological disorder(difficulty with her speech sounds) and severe selective mutism. From the time of her birth to the age of 3yrs old, she frequently had colds and ear infections and cried or grizzle every day. She was very clingy and didn't like to be alone. She is now 4 yrs old, her speech has improved with regular exercises on her speech sounds. She attends kindergarten still presents selective mutism, teachers and i are working together on her confidence and hopefully achieve some small goals to reduce the SM. After visiting this site i want to say the information has been very helpful. Added: February 27, 2007 |

I just would like to say for every parent tha**truggling with the schools about SM is to take charge do not let them have the upper hand because they do not know whats going on at home. My daughter has just recently gotton over SM at the age of 7 she is even reciting poems in front of the class! But before I was going through the same blame game just because they never heard of SM and I live in a small town. I was terrified that they was going to take her away just because they could not understand this problem. I learned my rights for her to be tested, I did alot of research on SM and gave them a copy of teaching sm children for teachers and video tapped everything her playing, laughing, and working the teachers were amazed how different she was at home. So take matters in your own hands dont wait until they take your child away stay one step ahead! Added: February 27, 2007 |

I am a kindergarten teacher and have a little girl in my class who has SM - she is so happy at school and is eager to participate in everything we do - she even ra** her hand to answer questions but does not talk or even attempt to when we call on her. She nods her head and shakes it for "yes and no" answers but that is all we get. I really do love this little girl and would do anything at all to help her and her family. If anyone has any suggestions, I would so appreciate it. Added: January 30, 2007 |

Hello, I have a 12 year old neice Heather, She has had a problem of not speaking in school and in public. I spoke to my therapist last night about Heather. She mentioned that it sounds like this is what Heather has. Where do I start to help her? School has her in counceling with the social worker and the school has been questioning the family. They mentioned that she may be affraid to talk at school because she is abused at home. No Way! We would never hurt her. Even when we took her to a medical doctor, she just started yelling at Heather to make her talk. Heather started to cry quietly. She still would not talk. Heather talks nonstop at home and when she is with me. The teachers said she started to speak a little at the end of school last year but when she came back this year, she is not talking at all. I need advice- I want to help her. Thanks Donis Added: January 25, 2007 |
