I have a 14 year old daughter with SM diagnosed at age 4. With treatment, she has slowly made gains over the years but there are definite ups and downs and it looks like high school will be quite a challenge. Any advice/support in the area would be appreciated.

My 10 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with Selective Mutism. This is totally new to me and I had never heard of it until last month. She has had two sessions with a therapist. She began showing signs of this at age 4, but everyone told me she was shy and that she would outgrow it. I would like to correspond with other parents.

Hi. I stumbled across an article about Selective Mutism in the local paper. It described my daughter to a T, I'm pretty concerned. Does anyone know where in Illinois I can go to get help? Thanks.

As a child of Selective Mutism, I can finally find comfort in knowing that I am not alone with this. Your information on Selective Mutism are correct. Through reading your symptoms, I can finally rest in knowing what I had. Thanks for your research and advise on your web-site. With this information and experience, I hope that I can in some way help children with their struggles with this.

Sincerely,
Janice

My daughter is 7 yrs old with selective Mutism. She was diagnoised when she was 6. I need advise on school issues and testing accomaditions. She recieved Psych appts for 1 year and now were seeing a counsler. The less she seen me "worry"about her not talking the more she "branched out". Everyday before I took her to school I would say" Honey have a good day in school, and if you feel like taking fine, if not its okay" She talkes to more kids now but not to many adults.

Hi I just wanted to say that I am an adult and have suffered with sm most of my life. I was very young when I got diagnosed with it. At that point in my life it was exstreamly hard to talk to the sycologist after my mom had talked to them. so our sessions would be me just sitting there trying to get the courage up to talk to them and exsplain what was going on and she would start asking questions and i would be noding my head. I would be in there for awhile and say nothing at all. I really wish I would have got the proper help when I was a kid becouse now I'm 26 and I really have to force myself to do anything to better my life. I'm thinnking about trying counsling again but I really am worried about trying it.

My son is now 19 and has been doing well for 2 years. He was never diagnosed with SM, probably due to clinicians' lack of awareness of it. I took him to a variety of professionals, but received little relief [I, myself, am in the field, as a Master Psychiatric Nurse, and could not help my own child]. If we can be of help, with research, please contact me. I am glad awareness is growing.
