Hi, I saw this on the news and I decided I want to help. I'm almost 14 and I want to help kids that have SM. When I was watching the news, I noticed I was a lot like the SM patients. I know how it is to be a child in elementary and refusing to play at recess. I want to help any children with SM. I might be able to help, you never know. I've gone through a lot of bullying and teasing for being the "Quiet Smart Girl" in my cla**. I was never diagnosed with SM but I know I can help a little. If you want, you can email me at Sapphire41026@aol.com or Sapphire41026@gmal.com

Hi my name is Nicole and I have a daughter that is going to be 5 years old in September. Just recently she was diagnosed with SM. She went to preschool for 2 years and had the same teacher. She did not speak at all to the kids or the teachers. She has a couple of friends that she did play with but did not talk. When we got together outside of the school she was talking to her friends but not alot and not very loud. She is going into Kindegarten in September and I need to know what I should do to help her start talking. She goes to a Child psychologist but that has not helped yet. She wont be quiet at home or at her grandmothers house. Her father has not seen her since she was 1 1/2. I do have a boyfriend that she is very close to he does have a son that is her age also. When they get together she will not shut up. Recently, she started talking at my boyfriends sisters house. But there are limited words. I need advice. It is hard enough raising a child by yourself but now I am trying to raise her with selective mutism. I need to know what I should do and what others need to do when they watch her. She now goes to summer school for 2 1/2 hours a day 4 days a week and will not speak there but she will play with the kids. She does get watched by my mother the other time. Please help me.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I am a mother of a 10 year old SM child. He was first diagnosed at the age of 5. My son has just finished the 4th grade and he has never said one word to any of his teachers. He only talks to children his age, my husband, mother and myself. He does not talk to any adults. I would like to tell all parents with children with SM not to give up. It is a very difficult and frustrating disorder to deal with but have hope like I do that help will come. My son was involved in a research study at UCLA with one of the best therapist for a period of 6 months. And let me say that towards the end of the study my son was whispering words to his thereapist. This brought tears to my eyes. The type of therapy that was used was called "intergrated Behavioral Therapy". and I know that if my son would have been able to continue he would of eventually talked. Unfortunately this was just a study and could not go more than 6 months. So parents dont give up!. Keep looking for help and if there's any parents in the L.A. area contact UCLA so that you can be part of this study .It works! best of luck to everyone.

Is there someone on this planet who can help my daughter. Three years and no help yet. Her life is passing her by and I feel like I am tied to a chair because I can't find help for her.

HI,
Just been looking through comments on this site. Re comments from Sue from Lancashire I just wanted to let you know that I have daughter with sm. She is now 8 and first showed signs of it when she was around 4. I found it difficult to get any support at all and although went to doctors, psychologists etc I was dismissed as being an over anxious, over protective mother and told that my daughter would grow out of it (she didn't!). Unlike other kids with SM my daughter does speak in school butg not with members of my family and friends.
Anyway - I just wanted to say..please don't lose hope. For the first time in 4-5 years my daughter has just spoken to a few people in my family!! We are obviously over joyed! I could never imagine that this day would arrive! We never got proper help until around 6 mths ago and what a difference it has made. Please email me and I would be happy to pass on any info I have rather than me adding all details here.
