I am an adult with SM. I feel it interferes with my ability to fully protect my child which makes it worse. I wish more people knew about it. I didn't know I had it until 20 years old.

I am a 5th grade teacher who teaches a child who demonstrates the symptoms of selective mutism. He has not been diagnosed, nor do I know how to initiate the process. He frequently gets in trouble because others perceive his non-interaction as being defiant and disrespectful. He is intelligent and does anything I ask of him in the classroom, as long as is doesn't require him to speak.

I have a daughter who is currently 13 years old and no longer speaks at all at school and very, very little at home (only to get something she really wants mainly). She had selective mutism at age 4 which lasted about a year. After taking prozac, she began speaking at school and continued even though the prozac was stopped. The total mutism began when she was 12 years old. Anyone else have success treating this? She was also diagnosed with PDD-NOS at 3.

Hello,
My 8yr old daughter has suffered from SM since she was about four years old. This has been a very hard battle not only for her but for us as a family. It's very difficult at school, especially when the new school year starts. I've felt like the teachers look at me as if I've done something to cause this. I love my daughter with all my heart. I'm willing to work with her to try to help her to be freed from this. I have had a total of nine people come to me and they all have said the same thing.
"Joni, I had a dream about your daughter. In this dream, she was talking and talking."
All of these people who have dreamed about my daughter are Sunday school teacher, or close relatives. The eighth person who had the dream was her current school teacher. This occurred about two months ago. I was at a school conference, all of her teachers and I was gathered around the table. When her teacher told everyone that she had a dream about my daughter, I knew what the dream was about before she started the next sentence.
I have given this to the Lord and I know that He's going to help. I believe that He is confirming to me that my daughter is going to talk and its going to be a suddenly moment. In His Word, He says that He will confirm something with two to three witnesses. Well, He has confirmed it to me 9 times. My hope is in Him....I'm not bragging about this, I just want to encourage others that the Lord will help.

God Bless You All

I've been reading about different therapies for SM, but I haven't read or heard of anyone trying hypnotherapy. If anyone has tried this or heard of having any success with it, please let me know. I am considering trying it with my daughter, however, if it has been repeatedly tried and known to be unsuccessful, I would like to know before trying. It is expensive and I don't want to waste time and money on something useless.

My daughter Shelbi was diagnosed with SM when she was 5 she is now 10. It has been a long road but we have made progress. We have tried play therapy, speech therapy, and medicaton. All have helped to some degree. The only tx now is medication(Lexapro). She has only been talking to other children for a year and a half now. She really struggles socially. She goes overboard and gets on peoples nerves and they get annoyed. I wish I could get kids to understand that this(talking) is very important and not to be rude to her. She also has some OCD behavior. Does anyone else have a child that exhibits this also? The strange thing is she has been a competitive gymnast since she was 4. She is now a level 7 gymnast. She performs in front of hundreds of people that doesn't phase her, but if you ask her to talk in front of people she won't do it.

Hello, I am a speech, language and hearing clinician in the public schools. I am interested to hear if any parents have looked at the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association web site for help. I have found very clear guidelines and suggestions for intervention and treatment.
