I am a secondary special ed. teacher with a male student who has SM. This is my first experience with this disorder in the 14 years I've been teaching. I really want to help him but the only info. I have is what I find on the internet. Added: March 8, 2005 |

I am an adult who was effected by Selective Mutism as a child, and I still deal with some of the issues as an adult. Most of the comments here come from parents seeking help for young children. Bless you! I am so glad that you are trying to help your children. It is so frightening to be a child effected by this, and so terribly, terribly lonely. Don't let anyone bully you into doing something with your child that doesn't feel right. Don't try to force your child, or bribe them and don't try to wish it away. Shower them with love, and try to learn all you can about it. Answers will be found, now that enough of us have begun looking. Very best wishes and warm thoughts to all who are effected by this challenge. Added: March 2, 2005 |

My 4.5 yr old, Anna, has never spoken to a peer at preschool after a year and a half. Her teacher recently saw a tv special on selective mutism and brought the term to my attention two weeks ago. I have been reading a lot these past two weeks and work in the mental health field so I understand the basics of selective mutism. Just dealing with the condition as anxiety-based has helped my daughter. We had her friend over to the house last weekend and Anna talked up a storm. It is only the classroom setting in which she becomes totally mute. Would love a referral to a therapist in the Columbus, OH area if anyone knows one. Thank you. I am a speech pathology student and had selective mutism as a child. This is very interesting and a relief to find a name for what I had! Added: February 23, 2005 |

I have a 5 1/2 daughter, who is now in kindergarten. She does not talk at school AT ALL, but talks non-stop at home. She only feels comfortable talking around people close to her (relatives). We believe she has SM, in fact I'm 99% sure she does. Her teacher and social worker at school are getting very frustrated, and nobody seems to know what to do w/ her. We will start seeing a child psychologist next month. We are praying that this will help. Does anyone out there have a success story? I need some encouragement. Added: February 19, 2005 |

I am a Pre-K and I have a Selective Mute child in my classroom. She has made progress in my eyes since she will do alot of things she would not before. My question is that this child is very "attached" to me. If I step out of the classroom, she looks out the door or will just follow me. Is that unhealthy and do I need to start weaning her from being so close to me? Any advice would be of help. Added: February 12, 2005 |

I have twin 4 y/o daughters who have been diagnosed with Selective Mutism as well as a mixed expressive /receptive language disorder, developmental delay and social anxiety. I visted you this evening to research Selective Mutism and help the newly created ESE Program at my daughters elementary school develop a education plan to suit students with similar disabilites. Thank You for being here! It's very difficult to find creditable information! Added: February 12, 2005 |
