My daughter has always been "Social Phobic" even as a young baby. She was just recently diagnosed with SM in November of 2004. She is four now, and it seems like no one has a clue on what to do next. They came up with an IEP, but really, I don't know how it is going to help her. This is a terrific site!

We have a 3 year old recently diagnosed with SM. He is the third of four children and has not talked to teacher/kids at school or any other people except immediate family members. My concern is whether to keep sending him to preschool where he does not participate/talk or keep him at home. He often seems stressed after the morning at school and would much rather be at home playing with his trains, playdoh etc. Are we making things worse sending him to school?

My little girl is 5 years old. It is a relief to know she is not the only one like this. She started Kindergarten this year and I have told her since the beginning of the year she needed to talk to her teacher. Since reading about others like her and knowing she is not doing this on purpose I can give her reasurance and help her through this. Thank you

My daughter just turned 6 and I found out that she has not said one word in school. I always knew she was shy and took longer than most to warm up to social situations. At home she is a complete chatter-box. We are trying to get her to feel more comfortable in the school setting, but not having much luck. She loves school and participates in activities, as long as she doesn't have to speak. Questions will only be answered with a nod if it is in the yes/no format.
