My husband and I have a 10 year old son who was diagnosed with selective mutism at the age of 4. He wants so badly to overcome this, but constantly struggles. As parents, it is so difficult feeling imparred when he comes crying asking us to help him. I am always feeling there must be something more I can do. He sees a psychiatrist, and he sees a therapist weekly. It has helped tremendously. I just makes you feel so helpless when he asks "when will it ever get easier, I just want to be normal like everyone else at school" There have been times when we all just cry together. Any more information that is available would be greatly appreciated, especially school, or education related materials. Added: January 29, 2004 |

My Goddaughter is 5 1/2 years old and is selectively mute. We have really been working with her this year. She meets with her therapist weekly and we have found that playdates and teacher visits to the home have been helpful. She still hasn't spoken in school but she at least participates in activities now. Anyone from Michigan? Added: January 28, 2004 |

I was wondering if anyone with a child that has SM what you did about school. My daughter will turn 5 this summer and will be able to start kindergarten. I was wondering if you find it best to do private kindergarten and then start public school in first grade? Any suggestions? Added: January 23, 2004 |

My daugter is 6.5 years old. We always knew she was extremely shy ex: hiding behind me if someone spoke to her and only talking to family members in the home. She suffers also from seperation anxiety. Kindegarten was very difficult for her I tried to get help through the school and got very little if anything at all. She started 1st grade in the fall shared my concerns with her teacher who has been very helpful with the situation but I took it upon myself to take her to a child psychologist have made some progress. Our Dr. gave me the info on sm today as one of her clients had brought it to her and she immediatly thought of my daughter. I feel as I read the info it describes my daughter to a tee. As I read the guestbook I am with the other parents out there just glad to know I'm not alone and that there is a real diagnosis. Now I just have to get support from our school who looked at me like I was crazy any time I requested help from them. Thank you to anyone involved on the research. Added: January 19, 2004 |

My daughter is 12 years old and next year will be entering the middle school. She has a learning disability - (auditory processing deficit) along with the selective mutism. The CSE is considering putting her in an inclusion class next year. Does anyone know anything about this type of class? I Know that she will be with the same 5 or 6 children throughout the day, but I am not familiar with this type of class. I would appreciate any info. Added: January 15, 2004 |

I found the informationn on this website to be very interesting and informative. my interest in elective mutism was stirred by discovering that my neighbours son has this condition, and i was and am interested to learn more about it. i am planning to go into teaching and youth work, the information i've discovered i'm sure will help me in these careers, if i ever come across a child or young person who is an elective mute. I feel i can relate to what these guys go thorugh, to an extent, having had a stammer for 10 years. Thanks. i hope that it will continue to help people. Added: January 7, 2004 |

Our daughter, Ashley, is 14 yrs. old and a very nice girl. However she will only speak to our own family, mom, dad and her 2 brothers. She does fairly well at school, enjoys going and has friendsbut does not talk to any of them but she does whisper. She will ask questions if realy needed but also she whispers. Her grandparrents have never heard her voice. She seems more tense when other people are around.Would this be considered SM? We thought she would grow out of it but no improvement so far.Any help in southern AB Canada? We would like to help her but how? It does not seem to bother her. Any suggestions? Thanks, Her dad. Added: January 6, 2004 |
