I am looking for any type of advice on my daughter. She was diagnosed 2 years ago with selective mutism. However, the difference in her from everything I have read is, she doesn't talk to me, my husband, her siblings, or anyone in our families. She chooses who she wants to speak to, but even those that she does speak to, she won't if we are around. As long as she thinks that we are not around to hear or see her speak, then she will. We have been seeing a child psychiatrist for some time now, she is only 7 years old, and this is started to interfere with her school work. Her school has been trying to work with her, but have informed me that she will not pass the 3rd grade if she doesn't start speaking. I am very worried about her, I know she is angry and depressed about something, but will not let me know what. I feel lost, don't know which way to turn. If anyone has any advice or suggestions, I am all ears!

My daughter has not been formally diagnosed with SM, but I am positive it is the problem. I would really like to hear about ways of dealing with it without having to see a psychotherapist.

My seven yeaar old daughter monica just gave me an early x-mas present. Monica has had SM since age 3. We started behavior modification with a psychologist in kindergarten at age 5. It helped but progress was very slow. First grade was better, more eye contact with her teachers but after a year still no speaking to teachers. After a difficult decision we could no longer continue to see her in pain not being able to perform in school concerts or join activities with friends. We decided to try paxil for social anxiety. We wanted to initiate slow, her psychiatrist reccommended 10mg/1 tsp per day. we started at 1/2tsp the first week and saw imediate results. (she started talking on phone to adults). I only increased dose 1cc per week, I noticed some increase in impulsiveness and activity. We did not even get to 5cc or 1 tsp and Monica improved remarkedly. She is now on 4cc a day since sept. She has joined gymnastics and is takeing piano lessons one on one with her music teacher. She has been speaking to her guidance counselor who she knew for 2 years. Just a week and half ago she started talking to her teacher. My x-mas present-she just performed a holiday concert in front of**roup of 40 or more parents saying 4 lines of her play and singing songs with her class. I am so overjoyed. All those who know her were in tears of joy at her concert. I feel for all children suffering in silence and would like to say there is hope out there, dont give up, find good people to work with you and look at all your options. We are so happy we gave paxil a try,so Monica can build her self esteem and friendships now and be stronger later to overcome her anxiety disorder.

My 8 year old son has been dealing with Selective Mutism since pre-K. He is now in 3rd grade. Our school psychologist suggested a support group. Does anyone know of a support group in the Buffalo, NY area?

My son Cordell is 6 years old and in kdg. He has a speech problem and does not speak in school. My family just thought it was a phase he was going through. Until yesterday his Doctor told me about SM. I guess what i am asking is what should be the next step we take with him in school to get him the help he needs? I don't want to make him feel like there is something really wrong with him. We want him to fit in. He is doing everything in class that he is asked to do but speak. I don't want to frustrate him any further. please give me some guide lines of suggestions to use and some for his school. He really like going to school.

Thank you,

Lee Ann Hissim

Hi to everyone out there! I have just finished reading the first nine pages of the guestbook entries. I just wish that I had had this type of information even just four years ago. We have a daughter who is 11 years old. We love her dearly, but it has been so painful at times being her parent. Like so many other parents/guardians on this site, we have alwa**truggled along with our duaghter as she encountered everyday situations. I always wondered why coulnd't she be like so many other children? It always pained me to see her missing out so much in life because she could not verbally participate in anything. She was labeled in her third year as being selectivly mute, but we received little support or help other than giving her 'forced choices' in activities. Social situations are so hard for her. To this day, she does not have any real friends. I have tried a variety of things over the years to her her foster friends, but they just have never workded out. NOw that she in in middle school, it is even harder.

If anyone out there knows of anything positive that we can do for out dausghter, I would appreciate the input.

I've sat here tonight crying as I have read these entries knowing that we are not alone anymore. I just wish I knew I had company years ago.

PLEASE HELP!!!
