After reading about SM, I truly believe my 13yr old grandson has this. He will not speak to strangers, just smiles and turns his head. Speaks to Mom, grandparents, and uncle, and slightly to teachers. Will not speak with other children or in new situations. His aunt said "Oh he just embarrassed me so much by not speaking "hello" or answering my friends".This remark hurt me very much as his grandmother. My grandson does talk with his cousin, but she lives out of state. He will not talk on the telephone, except to me. He has a friend who wants him to call, but he will not.My grandson has had this problem since around 5 yrs. old. When someone asks him a queston, he just smiles and wants me to answer for him or he says yes or no quietly. He is LD, is in ESP,in 6th grade, but some teachers do not try to understand. Kids also bully him and he is small for his age. Some family members call him lazy and stupid too. Does anyone know of a doctor or psychologist, who is in this field in my location? He is a sweet, loving boy, smart in his own way, artistic and loves and has several pets.

My 5 year old son was diagnosed with autism when he was 3. He didn't have a problem talking to anyone then. As the next 2 years went by he slowly stopped talking to adults, then grandparents and cousins, teachers and now three weeks ago, he stopped talking to me (his mom) his sister and his father. Mostly when I read up on SM I notice that everyone talks to someone, but he isn't talking to ANYONE anymore. He is getting help at the Mayo Clinic (my husband works there) and I am not sure about the therapy he is getting. The doctor told me he is angry at us and is rebelling, that I should make him ask for things or he doesn't get them. He also said to put him in "time outs" if he doesn't answer us. I just feel in my heart that this is not the way to go. If anyone has stopped talking to their parents or have had a child stop talking to the mom and dad, will you please email me and let me know how it is going? I am just looking for some hope, I miss his voice so much! Thankyou!

i am a 24 year old woman who was selectively mute until the age of 10. reading the comments of parents who are currently struggling with their children brings me back to when i was a child. i can remember being exactly how you descirbe your children to be. let me give you some hope -- i made it through and so can they. it was not easy. the road was very rough at times, but now i am successful and happy. i also talk a lot! my mother likes to say that i am making up for lost time! i would be very interested to make contact with other adults who had SM as a child. just to see if they had similar success or if they still ever experience difficulties as an adult.

I have a 13 year old son who has had SM all his life. In reading the literature on SM I find that it mostly affects girls. I was wondering if anyone out there has a son who is afflicted.

My son will speak when spoken to, but has a very difficult time initiating a conversation with anyone outside of the family. He will not make eye contact, though, and speaks very softly. I feel bad for him, but he tells me that he's fine and he enjoys his life. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I am truly frustrated at times.

My 5 year old was just diagnosed with SM. She has attended preschool for 2 years and has never spoken a word. However at home she is a regular chatterbox and quite a ham. We just assumed she was extremely shy. She was just diagnosed this week and we are starting treatment. If anyone has any suggestions or advice we would love to hear from you.

It's nice to see a site with so much information on SM. My daughter is 10 years old. She was diagnosed with SM at the age of 3. Since then, I have been learning as much as I can about the disorder. For my daughter, I have never put her on any sort of drug. I just don't believe in this sort of therapy. Because I think this is only done to accommodate ourselves. I have learned from my daughter, that it really isn't important to know how she ended up with SM, but to continue to simply love her, and encourage her to speak in social environments, gently. She is slowly, but surely speaking to a few more people. More so other children. But is speaking in front of adults indirectly.
One thing about her SM, is that I am struggling in the area of helping her be more expressive with her emotions.
Any way, I would love to speak with anyone in my area about my experiences with my daughter. Share ideas. Or in any area.
M.

My 5 Yr old daughter has been diagnosed with selective mutism. Our insurance barely covers any type of counselling for her condition and is very difficult in locating a specialist for her. She will also be entering kindergarten this Fall and I am interested in obtaining the video(s) available to a**t not only my family but her future teachers in understanding her condition. Please reply. Thank you

I am interested in finding out information about progressive mutism. I met a 15 yr old girl who stopped talking at age 5. I decided to research her condition and all I can find is about SM. This girl is not talking to anyone and she is very bright. Does anyone have information to share about this? I am a teacher and this is really troubling me. Thank you!
