I have a 14 year old daughter who was diagnosed with SM at age 6. She went through two years of preschool, kindergarten, first and second grade without speaking a word. We made picture cards for her to communicate her needs to the teachers and recorded her reading so the teachers could evaluate her skills. In third grade she took walkie talkies to school. She would go in the coat room by herself and read into the walkie talkie while the rest of the class listened on the other in the classroom. Eventually the class joined her in the coat room and she was able to come into the classroom and read. She has progressed remarkably since then and this week is presenting a 5 minute speech on SM to her 8th grade class.

I'm an elementary school counselor and I'm working with a 3rd grade girl who shows the symptoms of SM. The principal and her teacher have decided that she will need to be held back because she is not speaking, even though she is doing satisfactory work. Her mother seems hesitant to seek professional help for her because she does not want to accept that she may have a disorder. Can someone offer me advice as to what may help, or direct me to more information on shyness/SM?

I will greatly appreciate any help that can be offered.

Sincerely,
Rebecca Cavanaugh

I have a three year old daughter who does not speak a word while she is at preschool or in any social setting. She speaks at home to us and a selective group of people like her grandparents. She has not been diagnosed with SM but the more I read and learn I think she should be. I am not sure what I can do as a parent to encourage her to talk to her teachers and classmates.

I have a 4 year old daughter with SM but did not realise that her condition actually had a name and that there were so many other children with it. None of the health clinics, doctors or speech therapists have advised that this is a very real condition and not simply extreme shyness, so you can imagine my relief when booking her into preschool for next year that the teacher advised me that she had taught another child with SM and that I could find more help on the internet.

I was not aware that it could be treated with certain drugs and although I will look into every other option available, it appears that a lot of people have had success with various medications. I would love to hear from anyone that can help with more information especially in Australia as it doesn't seem to be as well known over here as it does in the USA and Canada.

I am just so glad to see that there may be light at the end of the tunnel as I have been so worried about my daughters future if she continues to be unable to speak in public. She misses out on so much because of it and she is such a kind gentle little soul.
