My name is Kim.I am a parent that has a daughter 8 years old that was diagnosed with Selective Mutism since Kindergarten.

We just had our IEP review and the Child Study Team decided that Tamara is no longer eligible to be classified as SLD
(Speciic Learning Disablity) and should be classified as Emotionally Disurbed. So the little services they provided has been cut off. Her Academic evaluation scored averge and above average..so she does not have a learning disability.

Well, this has caused me to put the irons to the fire. My husbnd and I in
the last few years have been on top of things doing what were told to us to do..so we got the therapist, and actually it is working outside of the school enviorment. Tamara spoke one word "PRETZEL" in first grade to the resource teacher and that is it.
I am reachig out!!!!!
My husband and I sat with the a**tant to the advocate at The Statewide Parent Advocacy Network in our County. However, I have sent a letter requesting
an extension in lei of the 15-day period they gave us to make a decision. This is my story..I am seeking help from any one that has been through as I am going through to get the proper related services, accomdations and appropiate support for my child in the public school system..I want to thank Ms. Gail
Kervatt fo reffering me to this site and giving me hope when I reached her site at 12:46am..

We are seeking and researching our options that will be a benefit for our daughters transition in the school for now and years to come..She has progressed tremendously outside of the school enviorment..That any stranger would say or think that she is "NORMAL"
she laughs, plays and speaks....with other kids. She is selective of the adults she speaks to...but will speak in front of them on the most part. In the stores, resturants she is vocal, unless she sees a child she knows from school, then she will shut down.

She is in Kumon and Girl Scouts with kids she does not know and has adjusted..and speaks a little..

Help...I am at grfireball@aol.com

I have a daughter, Alice, who is now 4 years old and suffers from selectiv mutism. She is now under treatment and, fortunately, is doing well. Therapists however know very little about the subject, so I want to give them as much input as possible. Are there other recommendable websites, books etc.? Although we are Dutch others languages should be no problem (except Swahili etc.).

I have a daughter with SM. She is now in treatment and doing wonderful. We had a rough battle with our school district but, with persurverance we won the final round! Children with SM qualify for 504 Accomadation of the American Disabilites Act of 1974. I recommend parents to request one for their SM. Our 504 requests that all classified and certified staff be aware of our daughter's SM and to not punish her for her inability to speak to them. That it was not an act of difiance. Also, we have final approval of her classroom placement. Her 504 also requests adaptive teaching methods be used if traditional methods are not successful. This has helped make school a less stressfull place for her.

I have a 6 year old son who has been diagnosed with SM. We've known about it for a couple of years, but can't seem to find the right help for him. He at one time would talk to other kids on the playground at preschool, but he has gotten worse and will not talk to anyone at kindergarten at all. Does anyone know of help for this in the Denver area? Please help!

I am interested in referring a 12 year old child for therapy in Rockford, Illinois. I am a clinical social worker working in a Student a**tance Program at a middle school. I am also wondering if there is a website for teenagers with SM.
