My 5 yr old daughter was diagnoised with SM back in May. All her life, she has been on an emotional roller coaster, trusting only a few people. She has never been abused in any way, and the most tramatic thing that may have happened to her was when she was 6 months old she was put in the hospital and stuck many times with needles for 2 days. In the rural area in NC that I live in, there is no one to do thearpy with her. Most theapist as well as doctors have only read about SM. Their answer to everything is medication. I feel this is a short term answer to what appears to be a life long problem. My main question is, what can I expect about her future? Will she always be unwilling to talk? Is it even possible to dream of college for her when I fear I can't even get her out of kindergarten. Also, on the subject on medication, it is my understanding that all these meds have been tested on adults, and never on children. This also leds me to belive it is a bad idea to use them on children if the drug companies won't even test them on children. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to help her? I can't even get any suggestions from the doctors in my state as none of them have any experience in dealing with SM. There is a "social flower" just waiting to bloom inside my child. She watches other children and wants to be a part of their world so bad, that she pretends they are with her when she pretend plays alone in her room, and tells them all the things she would if her fears would let her. Just in case you need some information to help you better know our situation, she is the middle child and has a 10 yr old brother and a 3 yr old sister who have no signs of SM. She lives with both parents, and has had a very secure chilke a word in kindergarten either. She is very in tuned to me(her mother) and at the present will only speak to me, her brother, and her sister. For almost a year now she refuses to speak to her dad or grandparents. She will however let them know what she wants by body language and is very loving with them although she will not speak to them. Any help anyone could offer would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I have a 4 year old that has SM. She will speak at home, to people she knows well. She has started Prozac and it has improved her sociability somewhat but she still does not speak in class or when in a social i.e. stressful situation. She is babied by the other kids in her class and she seems to enjoy it but I don't want to encourage her to take on that role.
If there are any other mothers in the San Diego area with young children with SM and would like to get together and maybe set up some play dates to encourage some interaction between the children, please contact me.

I have a 4yr old son, who only speaks to children. When in a setting with adults he will not speak at all, even when asked ?'s, he turns red and gets embarressed. He especially will not talk when mom or dad are in the area. Just checking your website to get ideas on coping and helping him in these situations.

Hi! I am a graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin currently working on her Master's report on the subject of selective mutism. Specifically, I am working on a literature review and would like to create a pamphlet of information geared towards speech pathologists to help them understand the disorder better and to provide them with information on how it is currently treated and what their role on a multidisciplinary team might be in the way of both a**sment and treatment. Unfortunately, there is not very extensive research on what methods are used most often in the schools, how long the treatment took before speech was elicited, and who most often treats these children and what their roles are. If any parents would like to share their insights on this, and specifically the role the speech pathologist took in the a**sment and treatment of your child, that would be very helpful. Of course, this is for my general information and to help me gain a better understanding of what is already being done. What you write will be held in the strictest confidence and will not be reported. Thank you for your a**tance.

I have a young boy in my first grade class who has not spoken for 2 years in kindergarten and has made a few utterances in my first grade class this year. I am excited to try the Audio Feedforward Treatment. Has anyone tried it or experience success? Have any teachers found something that might work better? I am willing to try anything to help this special little boy!
Sincerely,
Margaret

Eureka! I am a 44 year old female and as I child I refused to speak up until the 6th grade. I was very bright and when the teacher asked "who knows the answer" I blurted it out and was surprised that I did so. The children in my class began to clap their hands, they were proud of me. I was stunned and have been talking since then. I did talk to my mother and siblings, but feared my father. He was very abusive. I believe in my case it was the abuse that kept me from speaking, and also the deep shame I felt. For what I do not know. I now realize it was not my fault. I feel that it is creeping back into my life once more. I have not left my house in over a year except to visit my doctor who knows nothing of this. When I see him I tremble so bad and it is very embarrassing. What would make this happen again so late in life, and what shall I tell my doctor?

You help would be most kindly appreciated.

Debbie
