I've been reading the entries in the selective mutism guestbook and am really touched. I understand what you parents are going through. My daughter does not speak to anyone over the age of about 10, except for my wife and me and occasionally my parents. She is somewhat anxious about "performing" in front of people, but is otherwise a healthy, happy five year old girl. She interacts well with kids her own age. We are currently trying to identify a professional in the College Station or Houston area who can help our daughter. We'd appreciate hearing from anyone who knows of someone who has been successful treating SM. My wife and I have been growing increasingly concerned about our daughter's problem, especially since she is now in kindergarten and will not speak to her teachers. We tried to talk about our concerns to a group of people we had considered good friends. Instead of understanding, what we got was intellectualizing, horror stories about how people take advantage of others' weaknesses and veiled criticism of our parenting style. We ended up wishing we had not shared anything about our problem. Added: Sept. 8, 2001 |

I am the mother of an 11 year old boy, who is extremly smart with a high IQ ,but has never spoken to any teachers yet through all his cla**.He also does not speak to any adult ,adult relatives, family members outside the home, doctors or other parents. He talks to me, his dad and his brother. His life is hell, school a torture, and he often is sick to the extend, where his body is in pain all over, temperature rises within minutes, vomating and cramping. He is an emotional stressed out child close to breaking point. A 1 year intensiv therapie did not help him.One school kicked him out, because he didn't talk. The next two were understanding about it, but he gets graded on oral comunications just like any other child, even though he is unable to speak. As a single mother I am financiallyunable to get him better therapie and the school turned us down for the AB 26/27 programm, where they recomend the treatment and the state pays for it. My son is bylangual, German and English fluent, has extrem knollege in science, and a almost fotographic memory. Added: August 26, 2001 |

I just wanted to thank you for putting so much information about SM in your website, it truly helps others to understand what we, as parents, are going through. I have a son with SM, he was diagnosed in Kindergarten, and went to therapy, he is doing well in school now, and is talking...he still has times when he feels uncomfortable with talking, but, for the most part, is doing fine. I also have a daughter who is just going to start K next week, and I think she has SM also, she never spoke in pre-school, so it will be another struggle to get the teachers and staff informed again...anyway, thank you! :) Added: August 22, 2001 |

I have a 10 year old daughter going into fifth grade with selective mutism. She was diagnosed in Kindergarden and received Psychological counciling for years. She was also on Zolloft for a year. My daughter has advanced from the head down, non-participating, emotional child to a child who is fun loving, fully participates in all nonverbal schoolwork and has lots of friends. She is able to communicate quite effectively nonverbally with nonfamily members but I am afraid it is too effective. It is amazing how other children know what she is "saying." She still will not speak to anyone outside immediate family. My psychiatrist and psychologist say be patient but I am afraid she will never talk. Any suggestions??? Added: August 18, 2001 |

Thanks to a neighbor who is a social worker, I have FINALLY now figured out what is wrong with my 4 year old daughter whom we adopted from China at 9 months old. Now all of the puzzle pieces are clicking together: abandonment, orphanage, withdrawn and passive infant, initial developmental delays, and of course, refusal to speak since age 2 at preschool and at various other social events. Mainly, she will not speak to adults and is OK with other children. She is very smart and is extremely verbal at home. Now, I just need to find someone to help her. Added: August 5, 2001 |

My 4 year old daughter has not spoken to anyone at school or even extended family members for 2 years. I know her diagnosis. I need to know how I can help her. Her shyness is so extreme that it is painful for me to watch. She has been in a very nice preschool for 3 months. She has yet to speak ONE WORD to any adult or child, even when she is thirsty or needs to use to potty. PLEASE HELP ME TO HELP HER. Thank you Added: July 29, 2001 |
