I have a fourth grade female, student with Selective Mutism in my Special Needs class. This year is the first year she has spoken in school to anyone. She has begun to communicate verbally with adults and peers It has been a challenging year to draw her out of her cocoon of safety in silence.

I am a 21 year old female who has struggled all my life with shyness. Finally, I found a small paragraph in a book recently about SM that described me to a T. Once I started doing some research I realized this is what I've been dealing with since I can remember. I am just so happy to know that there is a name for this and that there are others out there. My mom always told me I was just shy and I would grow out of it. At 21, while I was still waiting to "grow out of it", I realized something was wrong.

Growing up, days would pass at school and I wouldn't speak. I was terrified even to just ask to go to the bathroom for fear of drawing attention to myself. To this day I hate walking into class late and feeling like everybody is staring. At work I keep to myself unless someone initiates a conversation and even then I have trouble with an appropriate response. Many people think I'm snobby. I had no trouble interacting with my 2 brothers and my one sister and I enjoyed normal activities with them and close family friends.

At this stage in my life SM has begun to seriously affect my job as well as being able to finish my schooling. Due to low self esteem I have gotten into bad relationships. I'm ready to deal with this and move on but at this stage it is extremely difficult.

I commend all the parents who caught it early and are helping their children to live life. I have so many regrets and missed opportunities.

I believe that my daughter may have selective mutism. Does anyone know of any specialists and/or support groups in the Chicagoland area?

I have a 20 year old son that has Down syndrome and has definitely been diagnosed with selective mutism. Is there any other parents that are facing this problem?

I am so extremely thankful for learning about this support group. There's a feeling of relief just knowing that there are others who understand what we are experiencing. Our son, whom just turned 7 was diagnosed two years ago with having SM. He never spoke in preschool, and still hasn't spoken to his school teachers or classmates. The school psychologist speaks occasionally with me, but it becomes so frustrating watching my son each day facing new challenges and struggles. It's heartbreaking because I don't see a lot of progress. He does whisper now to his teacher, but no regular voice, except at home. At present time, medication is not an option. My son is my life, I desperately want to help him, and so now I ask you to please help me. Any advice, suggestions, etc. would be eternally grateful. Thank you! Sincerely,
Heather Hiltz

Hi, My 6 year old son has SM. He's been in therapy for a few months and stll doesn't speak to the therapist but will allow me to leave.
His kindergarten teacher will not do anything to discourage the kids from talking for him. They all "take care" of him. He's a pretty tough cookie and takes care of himself till an adult talks to him....he almost becomes paralyzed. He talks to everyone at his after school care where he's gone to pre-school since 2yrs. He talks to his famly, most kids (at least after he's warmed up to them), some friends parents, one grandma, one cousin and a few misc. people. I'm concerned about his going to first grade next year when it may not be so "cute" anymore.
It's very frustrating for us because I feel like he can't go to camp, swimming lessons, art cla** (he loves art) becuase he won't communicate with the teachers or counsellors.
I'm not a drug person AT ALL unless it's urgent and there's no alternative. However, I'm interested in a drug people have been talking about. Does it make the child talk? What exactly does it do?
I'd love to hear from other parents, particularly anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area of Calif. It's a comfort to find this web site and see that there are so many of our kids out there.

Thank you for your information. I have been struggling with worry over my 3 1/2 year old daughter who has not spoken at day care for almost two years! I am looking forward to finding our family some resources to help her be happy and not so fearful.
