I have a seven year old son who will NOT speak to anyone that he doesn't know extremely well. He has never spoken to his pediatrician, barely speaks to his teacher.
The school has pushed us to have him tested, which we did. The first pschycologist at Children's Hospital of Pgh. diagnosed him at a borderline IQ. Of course, he didn't talk to her!!

We have also seen a language disorder specialist, who believes that he doesn't process information.

At home, he does very well. speaks clearly, understands what we tell him, and talks!!!

We have been given everyone's opinion, and can't accept any of them, because we know they are wrong.

I was lucky enough to find this site. I would appreciate any help, or information available. We meet with the school within the next month - they want to retain Ryan in Kindergarten for another year to see if he "blooms". We want to move him to first grade - he is already 7, and knows all that was taught in Kindergarten.

Thanks!!!!

I am so happy to finally find a website regarding selective mutism. I have been trying to find information for so long now and it has been very frustrating. I have a 9 year old girl who was diagnosed 3 years ago. She had play therapy for 1 1/2 years and the doc said that she seemed to be improving and that she didn't need treatment any longer. But it is a slow process and the new doc she is seeing wants to put her on meds. My husband and I are very weary of it. What are the side effects of these drugs. I just feel that not enough intervention has been done to help her at school. Please e-mail me if anyone has any suggestions. I would love to talk to someone going through the same thing.

Hi - I have a five year old daughter who has SM, we've been seeing a Social Worker for about six months now and have had no progress. I would really like to know if there is a specialist in CT who can help?

My 8 year old son has been diagnosed as a selective mute. He has not spoken to his teacher or classmates since September. His teacher considers that he has great potential (as he has compensated for his lack of communication) and does do most of the classwork. However, tho she does not feel that leaving him back would benefit him, she feels he will fall far behind in 3rd grade. She feel he would benefit from being placed in a situation where he would be able to interact with the instructor. She has recommended to me that he be transferred to a specialized school for high functioning, high intellegence children with similar issues as his. Do you have a list of such schools in the Bergen County area of New Jersey. We live in Teaneck.

Thanks for a great site! This helped me find resources for understanding a student of mine as well as additional references for a paper that I am writing on the subject for my master's program. Keep up the great work!
