I am an elementary school counselor in a K-6 building. We have a 1st grade child who is diagnosed with selective mutism and I was looking for ways in which the school can "help" him. Most of the faculty are patient, but others are not. He has made progress from Kindergarten to 1st grade but...His teacher is concerned about his reading skills and that he is falling behind the other students. He will now whisper to the teacher and myself but if other children are around he covers his mouth with his hand. Thank you for the opportunity to learn from this site.

I would like to thank this web site for the quiet support we received when we were going through the first months and year of dealing with our son's SM. In 1998 when we first found out that our son was not speaking in school and his shyness may be more than just that-shy, we started to research and surf the web and found this website. After seeking professional help-psychiatrist, psychologist, and finaly speach therapy- I am happy to report that my son is recovered and is speaking in public. Not only is he speaking when asked, but, he asks questions and is not too afraid to get on stage and speak into a mike.

Again, thank you for having this site available. For those parents who are going through the process, hang in there, have faith, and be very pro-active in school and therapy it does make a difference. Please feel free to contact me if you would like further info. Thanks again.

Maria

I just stumbled on your website while I was looking for information about shyness. I have a 4-year old daughter who will not speak to most adults, including her pre-kindergarten teacher. After reading your informative website, I am sure my daughter has SM. I'm so surprised, emotional and relieved at the same time. I have been frustrated for so long but I try not to be in front of my child. Her teachers are also very frustrated with her and they are not familiar with SM. I can't wait to provide them with some of the information on your website. My daughter has never really spoken to adults other than close family and those who have spent a lot of time with her. I remember when she was about 3-years old and I asked her to say thank you to a cashier who gave her the change and much to my surprise she said "Thank" and then caught herself and began to scream and cry. I didn't make a big deal of it but it has really stuck in my mind and since then, she has never attempted a thank you to anyone but the very familiar. I would appreciate any advice or information on SM. I would also like to know if there are any psychologists in the North Florida area. I would like to also share with other parents if anyone wants to e-mail me.

My daughter was diagnosed with SM when she was 4 and entering Pre-K. We saw a psychiatrist for about 8 - 10 weeks for 1 hour a week. She is now talking to her teachers. One of the things he had her teachers do was to have her pick a buddy to talk through. How this works is the SM child picks a friend to wispher all her answers to and they sit side by side. This child talks for the SM child. The teachers gradually move the children further and further apart until the child is talking out loud to her in the classroom. She then sees she can talk in the classroom and thinks progress from there. She was not talking at the beginning of school and this concept had her talking by Thanksgiving. The most important thing is to make sure the teachers are not punishing her for not talking, this only sets you back further. Please pass this on to anyone you know with SM. Good Luck!

To Parents and Kids with Selective Mutism:
I am organizing a Selective Mutism Fun Group for kids ages 12 and under who live in the South Florida area. My name is Carina Sandoval, I am 12 years old and recovering from
SM. My mother says I'm recovered because I've been talking in school for two years now. But it's still difficult sometimes when I feel a little shy. I want to help other kids like me ! We can get together and do things like :
arts & crafts, games, picnics, etc. My Mom, who is an art teacher, will supervise us at all times and can help answer parents' questions while the kids and I play.
We will begin by starting a list of interested people, then contact you with possible start dates, locations, etc.
Contact me in Coral Springs, Florida at (954) 227-2172.
I can't wait to get started and meet all of you !!

My daughter speaks up a storm at home, but has not uttered one word in her nursery school class (second year now) nor to extended family members or anyone not living in our home.
She is 3 and I have been concerned. Should I be taking her to our pediatrician? She is very bright and her language skills are awesome. However, only my husband and I and our other kids know that! Help!

I am so glad to have found this website! I have a 4 1/2 year old daughter who fits the SM description. I've always known that she is a quiet child but did not realize the severity of it until she began school. She would not talk to her teacher or classmates but the instant we got in the car & the door closed she would begin telling me what they did in school in great detail. It was clear she enjoyed learning but used non-verbal participation. The teacher has never experienced a child with this disorder before. Please help me ensure my daughter receives the proper therapy/treatment.

I am relieved to find a website that can give me so much information on my son's disorder. He just turned 4 years old and was diagnosed with SM about 2 weeks ago. He is an extremely intelligent and quite well behaved little boy, but I am having trouble getting people to understand that what he has is a disorder and not behavioral problem. I really need someone that is going through the same thing to talk to about this. Please E-mail me!

We are just discovering that our 5 year old daughter fits the description of a child with SM. I am in the education process
and am looking for any good resources I can find. I have contacted the guidance counselor at school and at the present he
seems very willing to help our child (she's in kindergarten). The teacher also seems eager to help my daughter.
After the guidance counselor makes his initial evaluation this week, we are going to discuss having her clinically
diagnosed. He has dealt with children with SM before and has some names of therapist who deal with this disorder. Does
anyone else know of a specialist in the Massachusetts area? Any and all comments/information are greatly appreciated.
I find myself reading this website and crying, but it is also a comfort to know that you're not alone out there.

Thank you
