Hello! I am a first grade teacher here in Anchorage. I have a little girl in my class who has been diagnosed with Selective Mutism. She has made it all the way through Kindergarten and 3 months of first grade without speaking to any of the teachers or suppport staff. She will whisper with her hand over her mouth to certain friends. At home, she is just like any other child. She comes from a family with 6 siblings and apparently one of her older sisters also had Selective Mutism until she was 5. I am looking for suggestions of specific things that I can do in the classroom to increase her feelings of security. I know that she is happy in my classroom, her mother and sisters tell me that she talks about our class and activities at home all the time. She will smile at me and hold my hand and likes to stand/sit by me. However, when I ask her a question (I figure I should at least give her the opportunity!), she just crosses her eyes and loses all facial expression. Her mom is not interested in counseling or extra help. She feels that since her first child grew out of it all by herself, so would this child. Thank you for any help/suggestions/further readings! I want to make sure that I am doing all that I can for this sweet little girl. November 9, 1999 Added: |

Our 4 year old daughter appears to have selective mutism. She speaks English (primarily with me, her father) and German (primarily with her mother). In our search for information about selective mutism, we have seen a number of vague references to multilingualism, but haven't come across much real information about any correlation. If you know of something (an article, personal information, whatever), we'd really appreciate a pointer to it. Thank you! Added: November 9, 1999 |

Hi I am a thirty three year old selective mute mom. I have a eight year old who has selective mutism (daughter), and a son, four, who is very outgoing. I am looking for other Canadian parents who would like to respond by mail, who have a similar situation. Filomena Wickman 114 Tanton St. Strathroy, On Canada, N7G 3Z9 Added: October 16, 1999 |

I am currently working with a kindergarten child, who I believe has selective mutism. The child was in preschool last year and did not speak. I have just heard of selective mutism and would like additional information. I have tried using puppets, and talking toys to get him to say something or to even make a sound. I even tried bringing his brother into the room with him to see if he would say something to him. Everything I have tried has not worked. I really don't even know of any organization in WV to recommend to the family for further testing. Any extra information would be a great help. Thank you. Added: October 13, 1999 |

I am being told by my 4 year old sons preschool teacher that he may not be ready for preschool because he refuses to talk at school. My son is shy but has no problems talking to a few friends and family. It usually takes him a short period of time to warm up to people. He has now been attending preschool three half days a week for the past five weeks and doesn't seem to be opening up any. Is it possible that this may be selective mutism and if so how should we as his parents deal with it. I don't want him to go through the same pain that I did growing up as I was also extremely shy as well as his grandfather. Can anyone please tell me what would our best course of action be? Thanks Lori Added: October 4, 1999 |

My daughter is 6 years old and was diagnosed this summer with s.m. We have always been a homeschooling family but our doctor thought it best if she try going to school. This is working out surprisingly well. She is whispering to her teachers and friends. We never expected this and are thrilled. She sa**he likes school. This school has been amazingly supportive, gentle and kind. Added: October 4, 1999 |
