I am currently teaching third grade in a public elementary school. In my class there is a girl with selective mutism. I was wondering if anyone could offer suggestions to help her out. She will not speak to me or anyone else in the school
environment. How can I help her? Any response would be greatly appreciated!

My eight-year-old son is undiagnosed (primarily because I am having difficulties both with insurance and the psychiatric options provided by my insurance carrier), but I am convinced he suffers from SM and I am desperately searching for ways to help him. I fear that time is running out to help him before his future is profoundly affected.

I discovered my son, John JR. is different when he was three years old. Now he is ten... He suffers from Selective Mutism but is doing pretty good with time. I want to tell all the children the story I told John; he likes it so much we would like others to share it with us...

There was a King who had three daughters. He asked the oldest - how much do you love me?
She said, I love you my father more then my horses. The King was very pleased.
He then called the second one and asked her the same question. And she said, I love you my King more then my gold...
He again was very pleased.
Now, the turn of the youngest came and she just said - I love you my Father more then salt.
The King turned pale and became very angry. What? Throw her out my Palace ordered the King.

So, his servant took the youngest daughter to the forrest to be all alone.

One day, while the King ate his dinner he made a face and spitted the food saying to his cook; why my food is so tasteless today, I cannot eat it.

The cook answered, my King, I did not put salt in your food. Why? Asked the King. Because now you see your food is horrible without salt. So is your life without your youngest daughter.

Suddenly the King realized the mistake he did and brought back his daughter back from the woods.

And so they lived happily ever after...

I hope all the children can share these wonderfull feelings with me and my son...
cannot eat it.

I am the mother of a 8 year old selective mute. My daughter has been silent in school since she entered junior kindergarten. She has been on Zoloft for a year and is now whispering in school. For some reason she is able to speak in a "normal" quiet voice to people she has recently met but can not speak to her friends at school. I myself am a former selective mute. I've been on paxil for two years and found it has helped me a lot.

Does anyone know a support group in Phoenix,Az. I have a 9 year old who I believe has selective mutism.
I need to get her evaluated and find help in dealing with the public schools who have been very unhelpful.
Thanks

Hi, I have a daughter who is 10 and has selective mutism. This past year we had her on prozac and had good results as
she started talking at school during the last school year. I'm looking to communicate with someone from Nebraska that
has a child with sm. Also I would like to know if anyone has
a child with other problems such as learning problems.

I'm 38 and I have suffered with selective mutism throughout all of my school days and into college. I have a 2 year degree in Mechanical Engineering ( I tried repeatedly for the 4 year degree but could not do it). I was in the Navy for 6 years. After the Navy, I worked at several jobs, and most recently, for the last 6 years I've worked as an electrical technician. I've gained alot of weight since leaving the Navy. I travelled alot during the first 3 years of this job, but I don't travel anymore. I bought a house about 2 years ago and I live alone. These last few years I've been suffering deepening depression, fatigue, perfectionism, and unreasonably obsessing for hours about mostly work. I've been feeling isolated and hopeless.

About 2 or 3 months ago, I started therapy for the first time and I've just started taking Paxil. I'm running every day and doing better. The Paxil, by far has been the most helpful for my social phobia. There are side effects, but for my situation, so far the positives seem to far outweigh the negatives.

My four and a half year old son stopped talking to others outside of the family when he was about three and a half years old. I was lucky enough to have a supportive pre-school staff who knew something was different about him and had him observed by an outside psychologist. She said he had selective mutism, but didn't recommend any therapy for him. A friend happened to see the 20/20 show which discussed selective mutism, and since then I've been researching the condition and attempting to get my son some help. So far, I have been unsuccessful in finding a psychiatrist/psychologist in my home of Pittsburgh, PA who is very familiar with this disorder. I would greatly appreciate any feedback from anyone in the Pittsburgh area who has had successful therapy with either a psychologist or psychatrist.
