I need to locate someone who can treat my son in Austin, Texas. He had all the syptoms as a 3 year old. Now he is 16 and failing in school because he won't communicate with his teachers. He also has nvervous habits like picking his nose and snapping his fingers. He is more than capable to do his assignments but dela**tarting them until he can't finish. This started about a year ago and is getting worse. He needs more help than I can give him.

I feel so relieved that I have finally found some information to help me understand what my 6 year old twins are going through. They haven't been able to speak socially for over 3 years and I thought they were stuborn and everyone indicated that it is probably "a twin thing". I am working closely with the schools child study team, private doctors, friends and family members to try to over come this. It has been impossible trying to find a Doctor who understands how to treat this, but I will keep looking and searching.

Again, THANKS TO EVERYONE INVOLVED WHO HAS PUT THIS WEBSITE TOGETHER TO PROVIDE US WITH INFORMATION WHICH HAS PROBABLY HELPED CHANGE MY DAUGHTER'S LIVES FOREVER......

My son has difficulty talking outside of the family. School seems to be the biggest problem area. Can you tell me where and how to start in getting help for him? I have read about this on your page and need help. Where do I begin?

I have a daughter turning 3 this Sun., Mar. 7. Reading your info was like reading her biography. I've consulted pediatricians for help thinking she needed speech therapy for language delay but I think she needs help for SM first. We attended an eval for speech therapy and Emily wouldn't even talk - they were surprised, I wasn't. They tried the bribery with candy - slightly worked, she whispered some answers. I had heard of Selective Autism from "Parenting" magazine and had asked pediatrician and speech theapist about that. They doubted that was her problem. But this
Selective Mutism seems right on target to me. I'll consult pediatrician at her 3 year check-up and contact you for help and info package. Boy am I glad Sue Newman is right next door in Sunrise! Also I'd like to add that the speech therapist thought preschool/social setting was the answer to Emily's shyness. I, as her mom, feared sending her knowing she won't (or maybe can't) talk to strangers. Your info made me feel right and not just overly protective. Thanks.

I would like to know if there are any suggestions for teachers on how to get my daughter to whisper or even talk in school? My daughter is in 1st grade and has not spoke a word in school since she started Pre-K. She will speak to one girl that is in her class only at our house or her house. Any help would be great. My daughters teacher has not come across selective mutism in 15 years. I am passing everything on to the teacher to educate her. The school district has not heard of this until I have explained to them the problem with my daughter. Now this year there is another child in the district with selective mutism.

I have SM and I'm 20 years old, in college and still battling with it. I wrote a comment in here 1/21/98. I can't believe what I wrote myself. I was just having a really bad day then. It happens every once in a while. I am doing much better now, than what I wrote then. I'm much happier now, thanks to my boyfriend(my first boyfriend). I've been going out with him for almost 10 months now. I don't know what I ever did without him. Though him I am making a few friends that I can talk to and act crazy with (the real me). I also talk more in school to to certain people I know, that have been in my cla** and meeting through my roommate or boyfriend. But at times when there are cla** that I'm in that I don't know anyone that well I am quiet and shy again. But I am a lot better now than I have ever been. I'm happy that I am at least progressing in some way. I just wanted to let everyone know who read what I wrote that I'm OK now. Sorry for the scare. If you would like to E-Mail me please do!! All I've been getting is junk mail and I would like to talk to someone who knows what I'm talking about. Thank you.

Hi there. Two things. First I would be happy to donate $25 at this point. Secondly I would like to know if anyone can answer my question on Drug treatments. Could you please call me for my credit card number for the donation? (843)886-9984. The questin is: My 6 year old daughter was on Prozac for 6 months. Initially she did well, but then started to regress and when we increased the dosage she became agitated. So we took her off of it. A)Do you know what other medications are helpful? B)Have you heard of CITALAPRAM. tHANK YOU. mARCI

Greetings from South Africa ! We have a 5 year old son with all of the symptoms of SM. He speaks to immediate family members and no-one else. He is very popular in school and a bit of a joker. He communicates with other kids by pointing, nodding, smiling etc - just not verbally. He will talk to anybody on the telephone, and talk very loudly to us in front of anybody. Very little is known about the disorder in our country, and ANY help / suggestions on how to help him will be so much appreciated - we are DESPERATE.

I have a 5 year old daughter with SM. She was on Prozac for 6 months and was initially doing great. When Prozac stopped working we took her off it. Does anyone know of another safe alternative to Prozac, and have any suggestins about new effective treatments. My little girl is such a sweetie, I really want to help her ASAP. Thank you.
