I have a almost 6 year old son who displays all the signs of SM. He has been receiving speech therapy since he was 2 and when they push him he shuts down. I would like to hear from someone who knows how to help a child talk to his teachers. He refuses to count for his teachers and therefore can't be tested. He refused to be speech evaluated and tested spring 98' at 8 months old. I would appreciate any help. He has many relatives that have this disorder also.

Our 7 year old daughter has not been officially diagnosed with SM, but the description fits her perfectly. She is absolutely, totally normal except she will not speak to most adults, and does not speak in school or church. She went through 4 months at 4 years old when she wouldn't speak to her Dad. Now she's in 2nd grade and her behavior is definitely affecting her schoolwork and grades, as she does not participate in ANY verbal exchanges. Would love to correspond with other parents as far as dealing with the frustration without getting angry at the child and "punishing" them. Thanks all!

We are currently serving a hard of hearing female age 11. She was identified with an hearing impairment in fall of 1996. Though she has the ability to speak and sign she does so rarely. Is there any information regarding SM and Hearing Impairment???

I am a school social work intern working with a 16 year old boy who has been a selective mute since the 1st grade. He still only speaks at home and with some friends in the community, but does not speak as school to ANYONE! I am looking for information that deals with post-high school implications for children who have been selectively mute throughout school, particularly as long as this boy has. He has written that after he graduates, he wishes to be an electrician or a draftsman. Any information would be deeply appreciated.

I have a 5 year old son who fits the criteria for SM. He is becoming upset about his inability to talk in school and make friends. We noticed this last year in preschool but thought it was routine shyness. We'd like to help him now before things get rougher for him. I'd like to know where to start: psychologist or pediatrician? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

My 10- year old daughter was diagnosed with selective mutism many years ago. She has been in therapy since she was three. She talks with all her friends, and is very outgoing in our neighborhood. In school she doesn't talk to teachers. Recently, her fourth grade teacher and I set up a limited behavior modification program, and we had some success. Within a few weeks, my completely quiet child was saying yes, no, maybe, hello and goodbye loud enough for the entire class to hear. It was very hard for her, and there was some regression near the end of school. We start a new school year soon and my daughter will be with a teacher who will work closely with her (I hope). We also have a new therapist, who has treated 1 sm child but needs more information. I'm looking for further ideas/input on using behavior modification. Thanks!

My name is Eddie and I'm 11 years old. I do not talk in camp. I feel mad when kids tease me. I don't like it when they tease me. I try to talk to them. I just can't! I wish someone could do something about it. I wish someone would read this letter to them and tell the kids that I have a disorder and can't talk. I think that they should know that I have selective mutism. They should also know that I am not just ignoring them and that I do try to talk.
Do you know what it feels like to be left out? I do. I experience it almost every day. I want you to know what it feels like to be teased. It makes me feel hurt and mad. I try to talk. I just can’t do it. I really try.
I wish the kids were told to stop teasing me. I’m really a nice person and I think they’d like me if they gave me a chance.
Please write to me if you understand.
