I'm a school psychologist who is looking for more informal yet reliable information about selective mutism. I have twin girls to evaluate and see in their file they were "likely" to have Selective
Mutism. I have met the parents and they agree that the girls are very shy. However, they do interactat home with them and with certain relatives. Any help would be appreciated. I'll be searching for any information I can in order to help them become more social at school. Please send to my e-mail address.
Thank you.

I am the mother of a 17 year old girl who was diagnosed with SM when she was in Kindergarten. She is a senior now, and
is doing very well. she has a job at a local Macdonald's where she dons the head gear, and takes orders
from customers. she is very happy and well adjusted, although she still has a selected few people that she will not speak to.
She was given the choice of moving to another school district when she was entering the 7th grade, and
has talked every since. Before, she talked to no one, teachers or fellow students. this was a hard choice for us as a family, and for her
but the end results has given her her childhood back. Feel free to email me any questions or comments, and I will try to answer all.

We are in the very early stages of finding out that our oldest son has selective mutism. His doctors know very little about it but are doing their best to help us and be supportive. How do I find therapists and professionals that can help? I'm in very dire need right now.

I am an Speech Pathologist looking for information on SM. I am currently serving a 10 year old boy presenting with SM who does seem to have a language delay as well. He does not say a word to anyone at school but during speech, lets down his guard long enough to participate in therapy (he whispers).I am also working with my school counselor in order to try and define what our roles should be during an initial referral. How are other school districts handleing this?

My nine year old daughter was selectively mute (at school) until March 1997 when she stopped talking at home, too. We had been seeing a therapist for several months at the time. I think we were probably pushing too hard. We've since expanded our circle of "experts," and are trying some different things.
